i. Human Years/The Past
Yuki has always been a bit flighty and carefree, a product of her adopted father's careful upbringing. She spent her childhood years, while aware of the dangers of the outside world, doted upon by her guardian, Kaien Cross, the headmaster of Cross Academy where humans and vampire children could learn to live in relative peace. The only problem with that idea is that humans were to never know about Vampires and Vampires were required to leave humans alone and not interfere with their daily lives. This generally created a great deal of curiosity among the humans - the Day class - and some annoyance and a lot of hard work for Yuki, one of the prefects of the school. As a way to keep vampire children in check Yuki along with Zero were required to monitor Day and Night Class students as they schedules changed between day and night classes. Yuki did her best to take it in stride but it wasn't without annoyance and fighting off a few rabid fan girls.
It should be noted that Yuki had no one but Zero to share this burden with, without risking exposure of the night class - not even her friend Yori was allowed to know. She and Zero are silent partners in this task, reporting directly to Chairman Cross about any miscreants or misdeeds committed. This fact alone showcases how deeply loyal Yuki is not only to humans and their safety but to vampires and keeping their secret. The constant late hours would cause Yuki to stay up late and struggle with her studies, something she had little patience for to begin with. While she excelled in classes that required immense physical activity such as physical education and sports, she has always been terrible at the intellectual side of things, something Yori and Zero often give her grief for. Yuki does not get along well with others her age besides these two as often girls in the Day class would be jealous of her for earning obvious affection from Kaname and also unease from most others because humans instinctively sense something off about him even if they cannot put their finger on it. (More on that later though!!)
Despite Yuki being bound and determined to uphold her duties protecting the Day Class, she spends most of her human life afraid of vampires. This stems from an attack she experienced as a child, this being her earliest memory of vampires at that time. Over time, it becomes more abundantly clear that there is more to Yuki's past and therein her relationship to Kaname Kuran, a pureblood vampire - the one who had saved her and brought her to Kaien Cross's custody. Because of her memory loss at such a young age, she must relearn basic human functions such as dressing herself and the like. Kaien races her with care, finding humor and sweetness in her missteps and quick to showcase them to Kaname whenever possible. He is the eternal doting father, teaching her that while Vampires can indeed be dangerous that it could be possible to coexist with them if one tries hard enough to create the opportunity.
Despite how grateful Yuki is for being saved and the longing to be in his life, there are times when Kaname frustrates her. His tendency to seemingly hold her at a distance, dodging questions, and even playing a part in manipulating Zero like a chess piece, frustrates her to the point where she's even confronted him about his behavior towards her on one occasion. In her mind at that time, it was never possible for the two of them to be close enough to be lovers, despite how much she wanted it. No one enjoys being lied to and having secrets kept from them and Yuki is no exception. What Yuki does not realize is that everything is leading up to Rido's games and to her reawakening as a vampire.
"The world is dyed the color of blood. It will never go back to the way it was before.."
ii. The Pureblood Princess/Awakening
In contrast to the bubbly and sweet Yuki Cross, her true self as a vampire possesses some darker and more serious undertones, a product of the world created by Vampires who only serve to use humans and betray them. Yuki struggles with her identity, struggling to reconcile the human life she once had with the vampire life that comes rushing back from her memories. As a child, growing up hidden from her uncle, Rido, Yuki was sweet and kind and worried only for Kaname's happiness. While he was unhappy she had to be hidden away, Yuki accepted that this was what her parents asked of her, even if her five-year-old-self did not understand the things she does when Kaname reawakens her as a vampire. She understands that she loves her family and would do anything for them, even if this winds up being the other way around when her mother sacrifices her life to give Yuki a new one away from Vampire politics.
From a very young age, Yuki and Kaname were always close. He would dote on her with presents and hugs and kisses and she would return them in kind. Yuki, feeling boundless admiration for her parents and their relationship, expresses as a child that she wishes to marry him some day. In vampire culture, purebloods most often intermarry and this is how Juri and Haruka's marriage came to be. What the young Kuran princess does not realize is that innocent happiness was temporary. Beginning with nightmares, it was always apparent to Yuki and her family that Rido would come for them. She stayed safe and sheltered away from Vampire society as a means to protect her and Kaname in turn chose to protect her from afar even when she was a human, not only a testament to his promise to Juri and Haruka but to also selfishly keep her within his grasp. Kaname's relationship with Yuki isn't always the healthiest. He can become possessive and cruel but at the same time he dotes on her and treasures her. Yuki understands him despite his numerable character flaws but she does chastise him now and again and isn't afraid to do so. Their relationship isn't as sweet as the one her parents shared, but they are still in essence each other's rock.
Zero is the one person that Kaname didn't factor in, when he brought Yuki to live with Kaien Cross. When Zero came to live with her and Chairman Cross, he had been injured by a vampire and had become one himself, even if it was suppressed for some time. As he becomes closer to falling to Level E, Yuki in her devotion to him, offers her blood to keep him from going insane. She wants so badly to never betray him and to protect him that when it is revealed she is a pureblood vampire, her immediate response is to run away from him as he feels angry and betrayed by the fact that she is the very thing he hates. Their relationship as children had always been playful and more sibling like, with undertones of deeper things. Zero always sensed Yuki's bond with Kaname and never failed to tell Yuki that it was Kaname she wanted to be with most instead of him, when it becomes apparent that he has feelings for her. What Zero doesn't realize is that when Yuki becomes a vampire, her heart is torn in two by both the men in her life. Vampires desire the blood of those they love the most. While it is possible for them to still feed on others, it is only their loved one(s) that truly satisfy that thirst. Yuki, living with Kaname for a time and away from Zero, thirsts for the both of them so the fact that she goes without Zero's blood for roughly a year by her canon point and doesn't go completely insane is a wonder.
For a time after she became a vampire, Yuki fought with her need for blood and tried to deny who she was but it is a mark of her resilience that she somehow grows from a meek human to a confident vampire. She evolves over the course of the series from a girl longing to be in Kaname's world, to a young woman who makes that world her own. She has always been fiesty and head strong and never afraid to tell others when they are wrong. She is devoted to her friends and her loved ones and is devoted to the things her parents wished for her - to live a peaceful life. While she can be impulsive and makes innumerable mistakes, Yuki tends to roll with the punches literally and figuratively. She adapts, even when everything around her screams at her to be afraid and unsure. For a time she was that person, afraid and unsure of her future. She thought that by trying to be close to Zero, she could let go of the fact that she essentially had no past, but it was that past that formed her as much as the present.
► Species: Kitsune
► Abilities/Powers:
- Telekinesis
- Blood manipulation (possibly?): This one needs an explanation. Basically how it works is Yuki can use her blood to manipulate it into great big butterfly wings she can fly around with. Kaname describes this as the embodiment of her powers. (sort of how Aidou uses ice).
- Anti-Vampire Weapon resistance and to that effect wield an anti-vampire weapon, specifically Artemis.
- Ability to cure hallucinations with her blood (this could also fall under blood manipulation I think)
- Ability to interfere with memory blocking be it on herself or others, reversely she also has the ability to strip another person's memories
- Shadow manipulation as an offensive or defensive ability
- Summons familiars - specifically foxes and wolves. This requires that she put a piece of her heart inside of them. If something were to happen to her body she would be able to stay alive through this means.
- Heightened senses - this extends to being able to sense an enemy miles away
A lot of these abilities do not awaken until later canon points but currently she has access to telekinesis, heightened strength, sight and smell as well as Anti Vampire Weapon resistance. This only extends to wielding Artemis and she can still be injured by other Anti Vampire Weapons.
